Anyone that works or lives in Downtown Detroit knows that Campus Martius is a great place to be, especially during the hot summer months. But for some that live or work just a little to far from the park, are about to get a reprieve. DTE Energy as announced a plan to build a new public park near the Grand Army of the Republic building, along Grand River Avenue.
The DTE park, not yet officially named, is planned for the DTE-owned triangular parcel bounded by Grand River Avenue, Plaza Drive and First Street and directly across the street from the Grand Army of the Republic Building, commonly known as the GAR building.
For now, it’s piles of dirt and heavy equipment dedicated to new Detroit Red Wings arena and related construction that Dave Meador sees when he looks down from his 24th floor office window at DTE headquarters. To Meador, it’s a large chunk of western downtown not living up to its potential.
But while no one should expect Detroit-based DTE, of which Meador is vice chairman and chief administrative officer, to become the next Dan Gilbert or Chris Ilitch, the company is playing a role in transformative development in this corner of downtown. By turning a 1.5-acre parcel directly in front of the headquarters into a new park, the project is akin to what the 2.5-acre Campus Martius Park has meant to the area at the core of downtown.
